The object of blackjack is to get a deck of cards that add up to 21. Less than that is good. More than that is a bust, a lost arm. Numbered cards, from 2 to 10, count as the number printed on the card. Face cards also count as 10. An ace can be either a 1 or an 11, depending on which one you choose. So if you have 9 cards and two aces, you have 21: 9 + 11 aces + 1 ace. It’s fabulous.

When you sit down to play blackjack, the only person you’re playing against is the dealer, who represents the house. Everyone else at the table affects how the cards fall: if someone right before you hits and gets the ace you want, that’s one less ace in the deck to fall, but they’re not the enemy.
When it’s your turn to play blackjack, the only house card you can see affects what you do as much as the cards in your hand. The dealer always goes after each player’s turn, but your decision to hit or stand is entirely based on how the house rules work. Knowing how these rules work is the real key to victory.
It’s very simple: if the house is 16 or less, the dealer must hit. When the total is 17 or more, the dealer must stand. The only wrinkle here is if the house has a “soft 17”, which is an ace and an 8. Most casinos require the dealer to hit a soft 17 and then continue playing under the same “be 17 or more” rule.
Whenever you play blackjack, you assume that the card you don’t see is probably a 10. It’s a matter of chance. There are 52 cards in the deck, but taking all the face cards into account, the total of 16 cards is 10. That’s compared to four of each of the other cards.

Let’s think about it now practically. Forget about your hand for a moment. If the dealer’s up card is a 6, it is treated as if he had a 16, which means he must hit when it is his turn. If the top card is a 7, they probably have a 17 – automatic support.
Your decision to strike or stand is based on the same assumption. You can (and should) hit safely if your hand, the sum of all cards, is 11 or less. Once you get more than 11, it all depends on what the dealer has.

At that point, you are betting that the dealer will go out of business. If the house is a 16 and you have to hit, you will most likely roll a 10. On a particular 16, any card higher than a 5 (except an ace) will fail the dealer. So if the dealer shows a 6, you want to keep even if you only have a 12.

There is a special case worth noting. If the house shows a 2 or 3 and you have a 12, most pros will make you hit. Only a 10 (or a 9 if you’ve got a 13) will get you into this situation, and it’s also the only time you narrow the odds a bit and say, “Okay, the dealer might not hide a 10 here.”
There are other advanced strategies, such as doubling or splitting hands, but I won’t go into them here. Blackjack (and really every other version of the video game I’ve come across) emphasizes “straight bets.” You bet, play a hand, double your bet if you win. When the next hand starts, you bet the same amount of money and continue playing the same way.

It’s a viable blackjack strategy in terms of the math and how the odds work. It’s also ridiculously boring and slow. Fortunately, that’s not the only option. Enter progressive rates.
With this approach, the amount you bet on each hand is affected by the amount you won or lost on the previous hand. There are many ways to do this, but I will share a strategy that has always worked for me. That’s not to say I’ve never lost; it just reflects how I’ve played the odds most successfully.
With progressive betting, your bet amount is affected by your win or loss on the previous hand.
Start with the minimum table bet. Let’s say it’s $5. You bet that. you win You now have $10, double your original bet. Let it ride. He wins again, bringing the table total to $20. At this point, withdraw $5 and place a bet of $15. If you win or lose the next hand, returning the original $5 means you’ve already broken even and are fully betting the “winning” money.

How you bet from here on out depends on how conservative or aggressive a player you are. If I win this third hand, the $15 bet doubles to $30 and I personally get $10 back. So now I have a $20 bet on the table, $5 more than my previous bet, and I added $10 of my winnings to my deposit.
The goal in blackjack, at least when I play, is to stay afloat and keep betting conservatively until I hit what’s called a run, or a string of consecutive winning hands. Once I get past that initial stretch of two winning hands in a row (ie, once I’ve paid my initial bet), I won’t risk anything on every subsequent hand.
In a more aggressive strategy, you can only get back $5 and bet $25 on the fourth hand. You’ll grow your income at a slower rate, leaving more of your hard-earned money on the table to play with. But as the race goes on, you also breed much faster.
The details vary by strategy. My approach is definitely more conservative to keep me in the game longer until I can go on a run. Like I said, there is no surefire way to win. This is what works for me.

And other games: When you win a hand, those winnings go into your main cash pool. Emphasize straight bets because there’s only one number to keep track of: the amount you make on each hand. If you want to bet gradually, you have to manually set the next hand each time.
